About Us
My name is Denise, and I'm the proud founder of Fire Island Keepsakes. My journey into candle-making began in 2001, inspired by the hope I witnessed in New Yorkers carrying lit candles after 9/11.

While volunteering outside the Javits Center, setting up cots for firefighters and serving coffee to those returning from Ground Zero, I felt a deep connection to the symbolism of candles—representing light, illumination, and hope and began making candles at home.
I started by gifting my handcrafted candles to family, colleagues and friends. My new venture began in 2024 creating luxurious natural coconut-apricot wax candles due to my own sensitivities. These are candles I truly adore, and I hope you will too!
Spending summers in the small hamlet of Ocean Bay Park on Fire Island since the 1960s has given me countless cherished memories. Our journey always began with hot cider sugared doughnuts while waiting for the Zeeline Ferry from Bay Shore, Long Island. This 30-minute ferry ride took our family to a Barrier Island paradise with stunning beaches, a Sunken Forest at Sailor's Haven, and creative communities like Cherry Grove and The Pines. Ocean Beach, with its bustling shops and restaurants, and the Great South Bay’s clamming beds and fishing, hold a special place in my heart.
On hot summer days, my sisters and Mom would stroll along the shore, skipping through the waves and passing beaches dotted with starfish and emerald green, frosted white and cobalt blue sea glass, all the way to the Sunken Forest at Sailor's Haven. It was here that we found refuge from the harsh mid-day sun. This enchanting forest, home to 300-400-year-old American holly trees, also boasts sassafras, shadbush, and other hardwoods. Oaks and black cherry trees thrive here as well, though none rise above the double dune system that shelters them, giving the forest its unique "sunken" appearance.

Each Fire Island Keepsakes candle is meticulously crafted to burn for 45-60 hours, offering extended periods of illumination and tranquility. Packaged in eco-friendly, beautifully eco-friendly mailer boxes. They make perfect gifts for any occasion, conveying messages of love, gratitude, and appreciation. My personal favorite scent is Forest Chai—I'd love to hear which scent is your favorite!

Why Natural Coconut Apricot Wax?
We use luxury natural coconut apricot wax, perfect for those with allergies or sensitivities. Paired with self-trimming cotton wicks, our candles burn slowly, produce a uniform flame, and minimize soot.
We choose phthalate-free fragrances to avoid endocrine disruptors and skip dyes to prevent the release of harmful toxins.
Hand-crafted, our candles burn slower than others (45-60) hours and have a strong scent throw. Coconut apricot wax is biodegradable, vegan, cruelty-free, and comes from renewable sources, making it eco-friendly. The finished products are ceramic tumblers featuring a soothing matte finish, a glossy white interior, completed with a Fire Island-inspired lid.
